Joe's obituary
Joseph Emmett McKenna, 68, passed away on March 6, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on May 15, 1955, to Arlene (Santoro) and Clodus McKenna in Chicago, Illinois.
Joe is predeceased by his parents and his stepfather Bill Reichling. He is survived by his two siblings Michael McKenna and Donna Montague and their families, his devoted partner, Judy Wiggins, his daughter and son-in-law Jacqueline and Peter Sablich, his son Joseph McKenna, his adoring grandchildren Claire and Emmett Sablich, and his former wife Debora McKenna. He is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends who were touched by his kind and generous nature.
Growing up, Joe excelled at academics, sports, and making his fair share of mischief with his brother and friends (the stories of which he could retell in great detail!) After graduating from St. Laurence High School in 1973, he went on to earn his undergraduate degree from DePaul University and a master’s degree from DeVry University. Joe spent most of his career working as a systems analyst for hospital radiology departments and was a reliable teammate who took great pride in his work.
Summers with his kids were spent at the South Cicero baseball and softball fields where he took on the title of “Coach Joe” for both of their teams. It was a role he loved and was made for given his endless patience and calm demeanor. Joe also loved playing the Chicago classic 16” softball until well after it required taking pain relievers to do so. He had an interest in many sports but especially enjoyed cheering on the Notre Dame football team, watching his granddaughter's dance routines, and hearing about all the sports his grandson has been trying.
Joe first met his partner, Judy, in grade school in Burbank, Illinois but reconnected with her after he moved to Florida. They spent the last few years enjoying one another’s company, exploring the outdoors, volunteering, and traveling throughout Florida and the rest of the country with family and friends. Judy brought undeniable joy to Joe’s life and their happiness extended to the rest of the family. He will also be missed by Judy’s two daughters and son-in-law, Megan Connolly and Katie and Mike Bush.
There will be two Celebrations of Life for Joe this spring and summer. The first will be on May 25, 2024, from 10:30am to 1:30pm at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve in St. Petersburg, Florida. The second will be on July 6, 2024, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville, Illinois. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Joe’s regular commitment to donating blood and plasma, his family asks that you consider donating blood if you are able.
Joe’s unexpected departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him as his love, guidance, and unwavering support will be deeply missed. However, his spirit will continue to inspire us as he is remembered for his warmth, gentleness, and true commitment to leaving the world a better and more peaceful place.
