Fred's obituary

Joseph Frederick Ladner died April 21, 2021 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital after a short illness.

A memorial service was held on May 24th at Edgewater United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

He was born May 23,1944, in Mobile to Henry and Margaret Ladner. Fred, as he was commonly referred to by his family and friends, was found to be deaf shortly after birth and attended the Alabama School for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega. He was happily married for the past 25 years to his beloved wife Vicki Alderton.

Fred was a very hard worker who worked in a variety of jobs, including with Gold Kist Farms, Winn Dixie, Goodwill Industries, and Worksubs Incorporated, where his duties included stocking, shipping, custodial, and maintenance work. During the Christmas season, Fred volunteered as a Salvation Army bell ringer, where he was praised as an effective and cheerful fundraiser.

He was an active member of the Edgewater Methodist Church for the past ten years, as well as the Alabama Association for the Deaf and Blind. Fred was a popular and active participant in the deaf community and never let his lack of hearing slow him down. His interests included bowling, fishing, grilling out, and making others smile and laugh. He was active in his church, often volunteering to provide sign language demonstrations of Bible passages and hymns.

Mr. Ladner is survived by his wife Vicki, his sister Margaret Richardson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister Ann McFerrin, and his brothers Henry “Pete” Ladner and James Cotesworth Pearson.

Donations in Fred’s honor may be sent to the American Society for Deaf Children (https://deafchildren.org/dona…)
