It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Henry DeMattia (Joe) on November 26, 2024, at the age of 89.

Joe, a beloved husband, father, and friend, left us peacefully, surrounded by his family in Traverse City, Michigan.

Joe was born on October 25, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, where he grew up and cultivated a deep passion for sports and family. His early years were marked by a profound curiosity and a love for building and optimization, which led him to pursue a degree in business and engineering, at the University of Detroit.

In his professional life, Joe made significant contributions to construction and HVAC. He began his career at Chrysler Missile and DeMattia-Coutts, where his dedication and innovative spirit quickly earned him the respect of his colleagues. Over the years, he held various positions, each marked by his commitment to excellence and integrity.

Joe lived in Detroit, Michigan until 1970, when he moved to Traverse City, Michigan. In 1977, Joe moved to Alaska, where he lived and worked in Valdez and Anchorage, then retired to Cooper Landing.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joe’s personal life was a testament to his character. He married the love of his life, Mary “Barbara” (Thompson), with whom he shared 67 wonderful years. Together, they raised four children, Joseph W, Patricia A. (Michel), Thomas W. (Catherine), Michael A. (Shanna) instilling in them the values of kindness and compassion. Joe had three grandchildren, Ryan (Brooke), Jenna (Brandon), and Mitch, and five great-grandchildren, Rileigh, Raegan, Liam, Preston, and Juliana.

Joe was preceded on the last leg of his journey by his parents Walter and Catherine (Boersig) DeMattia, his sister Isabel (DeMattia) Wood, and brothers Walter (Connie) and Jim. Joe is survived by his brothers John and Bob, and his sisters Mary, Kati, and Susie.

Joe was a man of many talents and interests. He was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed hockey, golf, football, bowling, baseball, skiing, boating, and fishing. He especially enjoyed sports when he was able to include his children and grandchildren. Joe was actively involved in community organizations including being the founder of the Grand Traverse Hockey Association (1970), and through the church, where he volunteered his time and resources to help those in need.

To those who knew him, Joe was a pillar of strength and kindness. His smile, jokes, and stories would light up a room. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel valued and heard, and his wisdom and guidance were sought by many.

Joe's legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. He will also be fondly remembered by his extended family, friends, and colleagues.

A memorial mass to celebrate Joe's life will be held on April 25, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church Old Mission Peninsula,12675 Center Rd. Traverse City, Michigan at 11:00am.
