Joseph's obituary
With gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the peaceful passing of Joseph Anthony Gilbert on April 24, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born in St. Patrick, Grenada to Septima Phillips on October 3, 1937, Joseph was lovingly raised by his grandmother, Renette Prosper, and later by his aunt, Ivy Constantine, in St. George. He attended Mother Rose’s School, Fletcher School, and Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS), where he stood out for both his academic commitment and athletic talent. He proudly represented GBSS at the inter-collegiate tournament in St. Vincent in 1956, earning the title of *Victor Ludorum* (most outstanding competitor) and setting a record in the 200-yard dash.
In 1961, Joseph moved to the United States to pursue new opportunities. He completed his studies at the RCA Television Production School and joined NBC in 1967, beginning a fulfilling 32-year career as a television engineer. His time at NBC was marked by dedication, excellence, and a strong work ethic.
On June 16, 1973, Joseph married Diana Murray in Brooklyn, NY. Together, they built a warm and loving home, raising their sons, Nigel and Corey, on Long Island, New York. Joseph was a steady and supportive presence, always encouraging his family to grow, learn, and thrive. When their children reached high school age, Diana returned to school to become a dental hygienist—something Joseph supported wholeheartedly.
In anticipation of retirement, Joseph and Diana built their home in Morne Jaloux, Grenada, fulfilling a shared dream of returning to the island they both cherished. In 2011, they made that dream a reality, becoming active members of their local community and of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Joseph embraced this chapter of life with the same warmth, kindness, and humility that defined him throughout the years.
He will be remembered most for his friendly and caring spirit, his willingness to put others before himself, and his unwavering belief in supporting and guiding the next generation. Joseph lived with integrity, joy, and a quiet strength that uplifted everyone around him.
Joseph is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 52 years, Diana Gilbert; his sons, Nigel and Corey Gilbert; and his treasured grandchildren, Ava, Leila, Taryn, Jocelyn, Symone, and Justin. He also leaves behind nieces in Trinidad and Venezuela, along with extended family and many lifelong friends whose lives he touched with grace and kindness.
His legacy will continue to shine through the love he gave, the example he set, and the memories he leaves behind.
