Joe's obituary

Joseph Mathias George, III, 84, husband of Mary George of Pawleys Island, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Born on February 18, 1940, in Baltimore City, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph M. George II and the late Eleanor Frances Hopkins George.

A proud and supportive father of seven children, he is survived by Joseph M. George, IV (Wendy), Brooke McCauley, John George (Gloria), Samuel George, Caitlin Johnson (Patrick) and Nathaniel George as well as a stepson, Vinny Wang (Jean Zhang). He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher George and son-in-law, Bob McCauley. 

A doting and generous grandfather of nine grandchildren, he is survived by Noah George, Bobby McCauley, Hannah George, Cole George, Caleb George, Taylor George, Colby George, Luke Johnson, and Jake Johnson. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Brian McCauley. 

A caring and compassionate brother to five sisters, he is survived by Margaret "Peggy" Quimby, Pat Meyers, Lyn Jefferson, Jan DeCorte and June Bullion (Clyde); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe successfully worked his way up from a banker to a sales professional and respected businessman. He prioritized traveling to see family, staying in touch with his children, and cheering on the Braves, Falcons, and University of Georgia Bulldogs. He retired to Pawleys Island where he and his wife opened a massage business and cultivated a community of beloved friends and neighbors. A true conversationalist, those who knew him will fondly remember his wit, charm, encouragement, talent, love for animals, positive mindset, and tender nature.
