Joseph's obituary

Joseph Gary Jones, “Joker”

Bakersfield, California

March 11, 1962 — January 25, 2025

Joseph Gary Jones, affectionately known as "Joker," passed away on January 25, 2025, in Bakersfield, California. His artistic spirit and love for music will be deeply missed by those who knew him.

Born on March 11, 1962, in Denver, Colorado, Joe spent his early years in Littleton before his family relocated to Bakersfield when his father accepted a teaching position at West High School. Later, they moved to Lake Isabella, where his father became the Dean of Students at Kern Valley High School. Eventually, Joe settled in Shafter, California, where he attended Shafter High School. His high school years were among the most cherished of his life—he was an active athlete, playing football, basketball, and golf. He also served as the president of his freshman class and was a dedicated member of both the Studio Band and Pep Band.

Joe continued his education at Porterville Community College, where he played football alongside his brothers, Mike and James. His passion for creativity led him to a lifelong career as a freelance artist and musician. Whether painting or playing the drums, Joe found joy in expressing himself through art and music.

His daughters, Kristina Lewis and Summer Lewis of Lake Isabella, remember him with deep love and admiration. Kristina reflects on her father’s humor and talent: “He was good at everything he did and anything he set his mind to. He was funny and knew how to make just about anyone laugh anywhere he went. Even though he couldn’t be a dad when he wanted to be the most, the time that he has been a dad to us has been the best years of my entire life and I wish we could have more time together.”

Summer shares how meeting her father changed her life: “Growing up I always felt like there was something inside of me missing for years. I couldn't figure out what it was. That was until the day I met my dad. My dad wasn't just my dad. He was my safe zone. I could tell him absolutely anything and I know that he was never going to judge me. He felt like home to me. I will forever feel this empty void in my heart.”

Joe’s grandchildren—Qur’an, Normani, and Sebastian—brought immense joy into his life. His daughters and grandchildren were his world, filling his days with unconditional love and purpose.

He is also survived by his older brother Michael Jones of Bakersfield, younger brother James Jones of Lincoln, and sister Sharon Dandy of Los Angeles. Sharon’s children—Nicole of Los Angeles, Jamie of Los Angeles, and Ann of Bakersfield—also mourn his passing along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Evan George Jones and Patricia Ann Jones.

A private family service will be held in his memory.

May his creative spirit live on through the art and music he so dearly loved.
