Joseph's obituary
Joseph Eddowes, age 73, passed away on April 28th, 2023, in the comfort of his daughter, Elizabeth’s, home. Joseph was born on January 24th, 1950, to the late Susanne and Alfred Eddowes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Joseph graduated from Archbishop Wood High School in 1968 and went on to Temple University to earn a Bachelors Degree, while also participating in ROTC. He graduated from Temple in 1972. Joseph then went on to serve in the Army as an Officer, Second Lieutenant for two years. He served in the Army Reserve for two years to follow and then was honorably discharged. With his desire to help people, he then went on to dedicate thirty plus years to a career with the United States Postal Service.
Joseph’s greatest joy in life was being a father…a constant, unwavering presence in the lives of his three children, Victoria (Robert Carberry), Elizabeth (Brian Gennett) and Matthew Eddowes. Joseph enjoyed teaching his children the wealth of knowledge he possessed about many, many things. He was always eager to share wisdom to help them navigate the ups and downs of life. Some of their favorite childhood memories include bikes rides at Peace Valley Park, berry picking in the Summer, and going to the movies. He was their number one fan for swim competitions, softball tournaments and baseball games. He was always in the stands cheering his children on. Joseph later became the proudest Gramps to Chloe, Josiah, Juliana, Abigail and Christopher. The grandchildren enjoyed walks with Gramps hand in hand and going to parks to play.
In Joseph’s final weeks he was still thinking of others and selflessly decided to donate his body to science. The gift of body donation allows medical researchers and educators to practice, learn, and create new techniques that continue to improve and save lives.
Joseph is survived by his beloved children, Victoria Carberry, Elizabeth Gennett (Brian Gennett) and Matthew Eddowes. His caring siblings Alfred Eddowes Jr, Susanne Eddowes, William Eddowes and Michael Eddowes. His grandchildren, Chloe Gennett, Josiah Carberry, Juliana Gennett, Abigail Carberry and Christopher Gennett. He was preceded in death by his parents Susanne and Alfred Eddowes, his brother Francis Eddowes and his son-in-law Robert Carberry.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Quakertown Library, one of Josephs favorite places to go.
A mass and future graveside service at the Veterans Cemetery will be announced.
