Don's obituary
Joseph Donald Jones, 93, of Salisbury, passed away on April 13, 2022. He was born January 6, 1929 in Van Nuys, California to Paul and Margaret Jones.
Don was an Eagle Scout, served in the Army, and went to Hampden-Sidney College on the GI Bill. In 1953 he married Jane Powell of Tasley, Virginia. He began his teaching career at Crisfield High School in 1954. After earning his Masters degree at UNC-Chapel Hill, he taught at UNC-Greensboro from 1960-67. Don returned to the shore in 1967 and taught mathematics at Salisbury State College until 1992.
Don was a gardener. Besides the trees, shrubbery, and vegetable garden of which he was proud, he grew a wide variety of flowers so he always had access to a fresh bouquet for Jane. He was a do-it-yourselfer who passed along to his sons a sense of self-sufficiency. With his sons’ help he built his and Jane’s dream home in what used to be his back yard. He was a prolific reader who built a large shed to house all of his books. He was a piano player who enjoyed relaxing at the keyboard. Don was a golfer and a lifelong fisherman. Don was a sports fan, following the Orioles, the Colts (until they left Baltimore), golf, and college football and basketball. He was a true fanatic about UNC basketball.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Jane Powell Jones, his brother Edward, and his sister Marilyn. He is survived by three sons, Douglas (Cathy), David (Sally), and Daryl, four grandchildren, Matthew, Kyle, Jordan, and Janna, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Wicomico County Public Library for having the Libby App which provided countless free ebooks during Covid and after. The family would like to also thank his caregivers over the past couple years, especially the kind and caring folks from Coastal Hospice.
