Joseph's obituary
Joseph John Cummings
October 20, 1953 – August 10, 2025
With his family by his side, Joseph John Cummings passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy woven with hard work, unwavering love, and quiet strength.
Joe devoted much of his life to serving his community through his long career as a pipefitter with Washington Gas. Known for his skill, dedication, and integrity, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the friendships of many before retiring.
Above all, Joe valued family. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a proud grandfather, and a joyful great-grandfather whose steady presence will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gale Cummings; daughters Brooke Shaw (Jason), Lindsey Martin (Isaiah), and Alex Loveless (Richard Cross); sisters Mimi and Anne; and brother Jay. Joe was a guiding light to his eight grandchildren — James, Kaiden, Tyler, KhyAna, Amelia, Sarai, Psalm, and Chloe — and his great-grandson, Will. Each brought him endless pride and joy.
Joe was welcomed into eternal rest by his parents, John and Betty Cummings; his nephew, Ian Capps; and his son-in-law, William Loveless, whose memories he carried close to his heart.
His life will be remembered not only in the milestones he reached, but in the quiet moments — the laughter around the table, the stories told, the love he gave so freely.
A service celebrating Joe’s life will be held at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Mt. Airy on Thursday, August 21st at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
In honoring Joe’s memory, the family encourages you to spend time with the ones you love, hold them close, and treasure the simple moments — just as he always did.
