Background
My name is Melissa Torrey, and I am the oldest child of our family.
On June 26, 2025, we got the heartbreaking news that our father, Joe Torrey, had passed away. This was unexpected and, as you can imagine, quite devastating for our family!
Unfortunately, we are left to cover any expenses related to arrangements after his death. We have had quite a year! Less than a year ago, our youngest brother learned his wife and mother of 5 had cancer! Not too long after, we learned my mother, and mother of my 3 oldest siblings, also has cancer and is scheduled for a major surgery on the 28th of this month. This will leave my mother in the hospital for 5 days and a good month or 2 of recovery/downtime. Then, just a few short months later, a little over 2 weeks ago, we got the devastating phone call that our father had passed at work from an apparent heart attack. The house owner, bless her heart, did CPR for 30 MINUTES waiting for the ambulance to arrive! Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything they could do for my dad. He was gone.
Our father was a very dedicated dad. He has 6 kids, our youngest sister being only 13 years old! He also left behind his fiancée, the mother of our minor sister. My dad was the main breadwinner, and though she has a part-time job, the reality of the situation is that she is left with all these financial hardships. I am aware that she can get Social Security; however, this is a process and will take a while.
As much as we all hate to ask for help, we are turning to our community to do just that. We are hoping to cover the cost of cremation and stuff at the funeral home totaling $3,057.00 (if which $1,037.00 had been covered leaving us with $2,020.00 left), headstone engravings (as my mother and father-in-law got us a headstone), and if possible, cover at least 3 months of rent ($1,281.00) for my dad’s fiancée and my littlest sister to help with some of the financial burden she’s now hit with in this truly difficult time!
We had gone through PayPal and Venmo at first. This proved to be problematic as we had people copying my Venmo account trying to get donation money.
Even the smallest amount is appreciated beyond words! From the bottom of our hearts, we say thank you SO much for every single thing everyone has done. Even if it was something as simple as a prayer, reaching out to let us know you’re thinking about us, or leaving a comment on our social medias! We appreciate everything and anything. Contribute
