Joseph's obituary

Joseph Carvalho, 81, of Saint Paul, Minn., peacefully passed away on December 22, 2020, at Regions Hospital with his daughters by his side, after a swift battle with lung cancer.

Joe was born on March 16, 1939 to Joaquim and Deodita Carvalho, the fourth child of six, in Goa, India. The family moved from India to Kenya, where Joseph spent his childhood and young adult years in the vibrant Goan and East Indian community in Mombasa and Nairobi.

While studying at the University of Nairobi in 1972, Joe was presented with the opportunity to attend the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. He graduated with degrees in accounting and computer science and continued working in accounting and systems management for more than 20 years. Joe was proud to pave the way for three of his brothers and five nephews and nieces to come to the United States.

While in Eau Claire, Joe met his wife-to-be, Clare, of Appleton, Wis. Joe and Clare moved to Minnesota in 1977, and went on to settle down on the east side of Saint Paul and have two daughters, Annie and Henrietta “Hattie.”

Joe ended up spending more years of his life in Saint Paul than anywhere else in the world. He was a lover of all the great Saint Paul traditions – the Winter Carnival, the Taste of Minnesota, and the Minnesota State Fair. He knew the downtown Saint Paul skyway system like it was a computer network he designed himself. The East Side suited him well for 42 years and he loved working the soil on his little Ross Avenue homestead all of those years.

Joe was predeceased by wife Clare, his father Joaquim and mother Deodita, and brothers Anthony of Goa, India and Guilherme (Sharon) of Hemet, Calif. He is survived daughters Annie Spanjers (Matthew) of Charlotte, NC and Hattie Carvalho Hall (Tyler) of Saint Paul, Minn., grandchildren John and Amelia Spanjers and Clare Hall, sister Annie (Anthony) of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and brothers Dominic (Stella) of Eau Claire, Wisc., and Simon of Saint Paul, Minn, and 12 nieces and nephews spread from San Francisco to Nairobi, Kenya.
