Josefina's obituary
JOSEFINA AMARO VÁZQUEZ, loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, died peacefully in Miami, Florida, on July 29, 2023.
Josie was born on July 26, 1941 in Havana, Cuba, the daughter of José and Josefina Amaro (deceased). She has a dear brother José Amaro, sister-in-law Maria Elena and niece Madeleine who live in Cuba.
The communist oppression of the Castro regime forced Josie to choose between living under oppression or seeking freedom. In choosing the freedom of the United States of America, she was forced to leave behind her parents, grandparents, brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She married on October 15, 1961 and is survived by the love of her life, César Teodoro Vázquez.
She was the loving mother of César José (and his wife Julie Morgan) and Lourdes María (and her husband Mark Danna). She is survived by her four grandchildren Gabriella Marie (and her husband Scott Harlamert) Daniela Estrella, Nicolas Joseph and Isabella Marie. Her grandchildren were everything to her, as evidenced by the hundreds of hours she devoted to their dance recitals, plays, musicals, golf tournaments, baseball and soccer games and musical recitals. She had many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Josie worked hard throughout her life and instilled the values of hard work, honesty and dedication to the family in her children and grandchildren.
Josie lived in Metairie, Louisiana, since 1968, but she really loved Miami. Wherever she went, her "joie de vivre" and her beautiful soul brightened everyone's day. She loved going to the French Quarter, Commander's Palace, the Jazz Festival and she loved drinking mojito jello shots during hurricanes. She loved to dance, go to South Beach, her many trips to Europe and never refused a "sip" of Johnny Walker "Blue" whiskey.
Josie was a devout Catholic who frequently attended mass with her beloved husband. All those who loved and knew her were blessed that God gave her 82 years of life. Her beautiful and piercing blue eyes will live forever in our hearts.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Josie's life this Saturday, August 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Caballero-Rivero funeral home, Westchester; 8200 Bird Road. The burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Caballero-Rivero Woodlawn South; 11655 SW 117th Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that you make a donation in Josie's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
