Joni's obituary

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, artist, and warm-hearted, vibrant woman, Joni Grayburn Sampson. She peacefully left us on August 23rd, 2025, at age 85, with her daughter and granddaughter, Gina and Violet, by her side, holding each of her hands. Her departure came suddenly after the fulfillment of a long-held prayer for a family reunion, which was fulfilled just weeks earlier. We felt she had been holding on for this moment, as she’d been living with increasing health issues and dementia, which she faced with much grace and humor for as long as she could. Joni left this earth surrounded by love.

Born Joan Grayburn Sampson in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, to her loving parents Lois and Maurice B. Sampson, nicknamed "Noni" by her grandkids and loved ones, "Queen O' Fun" and "Joan of Art", and the life of the party! Everyone who knew her knew that she was a fun person to be around, and growing up, her kids' friends always wanted to come over because it felt like a party at her house. She was passionate about art and music, with favorites including Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, and Tina Turner, among others, and she and her first husband, Rafael René, raised their kids to be artists, musicians, innovators, and kind human beings. Her favorite color was orange, and she loved anything animal print. She enjoyed movies, socializing, dancing, and being wild, zany, and colorful. Joni also loved live music performances and sharing a good margarita with friends and laughter. She was socially active, relishing the Red Hat Ladies lunches, painting classes, and charity causes that helped those in need. Spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, was her greatest joy, along with supporting and guiding her children through difficult times. As a social worker helping young people improve their lives, her love for philanthropy and making a difference was evident in her personal relationships with her community and extended family.

She is survived by her daughter, Gina René, her three sons, Gabriel, Michael, and Christopher René, her five grandchildren: Violet, Elijah, Ryan, Leon, and Miles, and her sisters Kricket, Susi, and Mimi, as well as her brother Brad. Her zest for life and loving spirit will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.

Love Gina, And Mike René
