Jonah's obituary

Jonah Benjamin Flury, 22, passed away unexpectedly on July 11, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. Born on December 9, 2002, also in Portland, Jonah spent his life rooted in the Pacific Northwest, where he developed a deep appreciation for its natural beauty and rich history.

A graduate of the Fir Ridge Campus of David Douglas High School in 2022, Jonah was preparing to begin the Radiology Program at Portland Community College this fall. His plans reflected his enduring curiosity and desire to contribute meaningfully to the world around him.

Jonah had a profound love for the outdoors. Whether camping beneath the stars or foraging through Oregon’s forests, he found peace and purpose in nature. His fascination with unusual plants led him to cultivate a unique collection of carnivorous plants and succulents—each one tended with care and wonder.

Relentlessly curious by nature, Jonah explored a wide range of interests throughout his life. From fencing to football to experiments in chemistry, he embraced each new experience with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. Even when something didn’t become a lasting pursuit, he valued what it taught him. Over time, his passions centered around the natural world and science—subjects that sparked his imagination and helped shape what he wanted to do. He also shared his father's love of history, especially World War II action, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of past military events - surprising for someone of his age.

Above all else, Jonah was known for his extraordinary kindness. He had an innate ability to make others feel seen and heard. No one was ever left out in his presence; he extended warmth and inclusion effortlessly. His compassion touched everyone who knew him, although his acts of kindness were frequently done quietly, without desire for acknowledgement.

Jonah’s Christian faith was a quiet but steady part of his life—a source of strength and guidance as he navigated the world with empathy and integrity.

He is survived by his loving parents, Linda Rice Flury and Rick Flury; his devoted aunts, Sherry Rice, Sandy Rice, and Mary Flury; his uncle, Steve Flury; and his maternal grandparents, Judy and Jim Rice. Their lives—and the lives of many others—will be forever impacted by those he touched.

Jonah’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. May his spirit continue to inspire kindness, curiosity, and love for the world around us. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 9, 2025, at 2:00 PM at East Hill Church 701 N Main Avenue in Gresham, Oregon.
