Johnnie Lee's obituary
Johnnie was born in Alto, TX on October 10, 1935. She was a 1954 graduate of San Jacinto High School in Houston, TX, having been VP on the drill team, a member of the National Honor Society, a yearbook staff member, president of her class, 3 yrs as a May Fete Princess, and voted as the Most Popular Girl her senior year. She met her soulmate at the age of 14 and married him right after high school. (He had been the handsome older boy down the street, the high school quarterback, the lead singer in a band on the radio, and a Rice University man! But it was when he serenaded her at her bus stop that he won her heart forever!)
Johnnie's first 10 years of marriage were spent traveling with John's job at Shell Oil before adopting Cathy. As a mom and wife, she made a perfect home for the three of them as Shell moved them from Houston (TX) to Metairie (LA), New Rochelle (NY), Canoga Park (CA), Houston, New Orleans (LA), and finally back to Houston. She was always involved in the local neighborhood women's groups and PTAs, won several women's amateur golf tournaments, was on a bowling team, was a Girl Scout leader for Cathy's troupe, sewed countless clothes and costumes for Cathy (and later her granddaughters), crocheted and did needlepoint, was an accomplished cook, and had an amazing green thumb!
In 2004, Johnnie and John moved to the senior living community of Windsor Lakes in The Woodlands, TX. They loved that home and community, especially the trees and the lake! Her involvement in her community and church (Trinity Episcopal of The Woodlands) continued through numerous activities such as exercise classes, walking the neighborhood, Bunko groups, regular outings with neighbors, and serving in a stop kitchen and with the homeless. This was where she stayed until the summer of 2021 when she finally decided to move to Flower Mound to be close to Cathy. She thought she was suffering from early dementia, and her physical health declined rapidly after moving. But an autopsy showed she actually had extensive cancer. Perhaps she never had symptoms until the end, but anyone who knew her would know that she would never complain even if she did. She was the most positive and uplifting soul anyone could meet!
A memorial service will be held in Flower Mound on Saturday, October 2 at 10am at Crossroads Bible Church. Another service will be held in The Woodlands on Saturday, October 16, time and location TBA . A private family ceremony will be held to bury Johnnie's ashes alongside her husband John at his family's plot in Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate your donation to the American Cancer Society in Johnnie's name.
