John's obituary

John P. Taylor, 60, of Harpursville, NY, suddenly passed on September 3, 2023.

John was born on July 14, 1963 to parents Lloyd and Claire in Oyster Bay, New York.

John’s family moved to Avoca, NY in 1969 when John was in first grade. After graduating from Avoca Central School in 1981, John moved on to Murray State University in Murray, KY and obtained a degree in Journalism. John served in the US Army Reserves from 1981 to 1987.

John worked in journalism and publishing for the first half of his working career. He then spent over 20 years in manufacturing. He worked for several companies, including Alstom, Schweizer Aircraft, Sikorsky Aircraft and most recently BAE Systems in Endicott, NY.

At a young age John developed a passion for 1950’s Rock and Roll music, especially Elvis Presley. This love was inspired by his mother. John once competed in, and won, an Elvis Karaoke contest in Boston and was named “The Best Elvis Impersonator in Boston”. This kicked off a 15 year side gig performing as Elvis at local bars, small venues and private parties.

John enjoyed fishing, cooking, watching classic movies, and listening to music. The Rat Pack and classic country were his favorite music genres. John’s most favorite things to do were to golf and sing Karaoke with his wife, Rosina and to watch his son Jacob participate in track and cross country events.

John had a larger-than-life personality and easily made friends. Most importantly he maintained those friendships he attained along the way. It was his nature to always keep in touch and reach out to those he knew and loved so well. Many of those friendships began over 50 years ago. Because of this he will be missed by many.

John was preceded in death by his step father Gary Hogan.

John is survived by his wife Rosina, son Jacob, stepson Carl Miller, Mother Claire Hogan, brother Lloyd (Deanna) Taylor, and sister Joan Hogan. John also leaves behind four nieces, two nephews, five grand nieces and two grand nephews.

Visiting hours will take place at the Bishop and DeSanto Funeral Home at 22 Main St in Avoca, NY on Saturday, September 9th from Noon to 2:00 PM. Service immediately following, starting at 2:00.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Jacob’s continuing education fund. Jacob is currently a Freshman at Alfred University. This may be done by going to the following website:
