John Scott's obituary
John "Scott" Volker, 01/03/1950 - 07/11/2025
John "Scott" Volker, 75, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025. Scott was born on January 3, 1950, in Fairfax, Missouri, to Julia Ester (McCoy) and John Wesley Volker. He grew up in Craig, MO, where his passion for cars and all things mechanical began early. As a child, he raced go-karts across state lines—often the only kid in the race, and often the one taking home the trophy.
A 1968 graduate of Craig High School, Scott’s life changed forever in 1971 when he met Sandra Harkendorff at Camp Rulo. They married in 1974 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary—a half-century marked by deep love, shared adventures, and enduring partnership. Together, they built a life in Beatrice, NE; Colorado Springs, CO; and Omaha, NE, always making time for weekends and holidays at their beloved cabin in Rulo.
Scott and Sandra raised two daughters, Metta (Greg Fry) and Kiera (Matt Fisher), with patience, humor, and flexible guidance. He taught them to speak up for what is right, to treat others fairly, and to always eat their vegetables.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Scott found joy in life’s simple pleasures—tinkering in his garage, cruising the river in his boat, or simply spending time with his six grandchildren: Adelle, Walden, Everett, Isla, Vienna, and Forrest. His quiet strength, steady presence, and unfailing sense of responsibility left an imprint on everyone who knew him.
Scott is survived by his loving wife Sandra, his daughters and their families, and a circle of extended family and friends who will miss his wit, warmth, and wisdom.
In accordance with Scott’s wishes, there will be no funeral. He chose to donate his body to medical research, a final act of generosity that reflects his lifelong curiosity and care for others. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced. Memorial donations may be made to organizations close to Scott’s heart: The Nature Conservancy, Save the Children, or Habitat for Humanity (use the links found on this website under Memorial Gifts). His legacy of quiet strength, compassion, and thoughtfulness will live on through all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
