John's obituary
John was born on June 30, 1948, in San Diego, Ca to Robert E. Propst and Joan Capitanello Propst and went to his final resting place on January 17, 2022 when he succumbed to Alzheimers in Pacifica, Ca.
John moved to San Francisco, Ca in 1950, with his parents and sister, when his father got stationed at Mare Island, US Naval Base. He went to St. Paul of the Shipwreck elementary school and to Sacred Heart High School in SF, graduate of the class of 1966. From High School, John enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Ticonderoga as an Engine Mechanic and was awarded a National Defense Service medal for protecting our country in the Vietnam war. He earned his honorable discharge in 1971.
He studied criminal justice law at City College San Francisco while working at Safeway stores. He was a member of Retail Clerks 648 for 10+ years.
John entered the SFPD in August, 1977, and retired after 30+ years as a Patrolman.
John was most proud of being part of the elite SFPD Motorcycle Unit.
Survived by the love of his life and loving caretaker wife, Debra Coleman Propst. Also survived by her brother Richard Chew. In addition to his wife he is survived by his sister Kathryn Mayorga Cruz and her husband Martin Cruz. He is also survived by his loving niece and godchild, (who was his absolute favorite!), Michelle Mayorga Swanson and her husband Donald and their three sons Joshua, Jeremy and Jacob. Also survived by his nephew Jeff Mayorga and his children Jennifer, Madison and Jackson. Also survived by his nephew Christopher DeFreitas and niece, Ariel Waller. Also by his niece, Rochelle Propst Olalla and her sons, Carlos, Joseph and Zacharius and in addition, three adoring great- great nieces and a great great nephew.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers Michael Joseph Propst and Richard Malueg and his sister Salvatrice Propst DeFreitas.
John was an avid bowler since his high school years, following in the footsteps of his mother and father at L&L Castle Lanes in San Francisco. He won several gold medals while representing the SFPD in the official Fireman/Policeman Olympics. He was a “Club Pro” at SeaBowl in Pacifica, CA and volunteered as a coach for Junior Bowlers. He achieved many other trophies and medals while enjoying this sport during National Bowling tournaments. He had many 300 or perfect games!
He loved hunting and his faithful companion, his Golden Retriever named Nugget and his latest companion he was just getting to know and love, Mickey.
He loved eating! Italian dinners were his favorite! He was a cowboy at heart, loved his cowboy boots and his 10 gallon cowboy hat! And of course country music!
His spirit will live on forever in those of us who knew and loved him. He was a loving, kind and big hearted man who always had a smile for those around him. John will be missed! May you rest in Paradise John.
