John's obituary

John Edward Pierce of Arvada, Colorado passed away Tuesday, June 27th, 2023, at the age of 63.

He was born in Denver, Colorado to Mary Evelyn and Jewel Eugene Pierce on January 21, 1960.

John met his wife at Thomas Jefferson High School where they were locker partners and shared their homeroom class of Biology. John and Mary Anne started dating in November of 1977 and were married at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Denver, Colorado on August 18th, 1984.

John loved the Colorado wilderness, camping, hiking, and fishing. In his teens and early 20’s John enjoyed camping in the Rawah Wilderness area. However, John’s favorite spot was the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. He would travel each year to the Sand Dunes with family. John recently enjoyed a camping trip there in May with his wife.

John was a devoted, loving, and fun husband, father, and friend. His guidance, love and presence will be greatly missed. He always had a twinkle in his eyes and a happy smile. John was a positive man and those who knew him loved his big laugh and bear hugs. John’s intelligence and guidance will be greatly missed. His favorite bit of advice to his children as they left home was to “slow down and stay in your lane”. Given with laughter, love and of course a big bear hug.

John was proud of his 43-year career with Public Service Company of Colorado and Xcel Energy. He started working at Public Service when he was 20 years old as a draftsman. Working full-time and going to school at the University of Colorado at Denver part-time to earn his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. At the time of his passing, he was a Principal Engineer overseeing the Cabin Creek pump storage hydro plant upgrade project above Georgetown. Throughout John’s career he was able to work on many interesting projects in Colorado and had a positive impact on the state and his community.

John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Anne and their four children, John Eugene Piere and his fiancé Katie Smith, Jason Edward Pierce and his wife Brianna, Linda Jean Pierce and her partner Tom Galbraith, and Jared Ethan Pierce. He was also blessed with three grandchildren, Jackson, James, and Kimber Pierce. John is survived by his three sisters and brother: Theresa Swayne and her husband Lance, Barbara Sahlin, and her life partner Russ Wilsey, Janet Stevens and Joe Pierce, and his wife Kathy. Plus, many beautiful nieces and nephews.
