John's obituary

A gentleman and a gentle man, John Philip Darling, 88, of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, passed on April 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. John was well respected and beloved for his kindly nature, agreeable manner, and dedicated loyalty.

The son of Philip and Ruth (Robertson) Darling, John and his sister Diane grew up in Waupaca and Monroe, Wisconsin, where he excelled in academics and music. In 1958 he earned his degree in accounting from the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was elected President of the chapter. John served as a Lieutenant of the United States Army in Okinawa, Japan for two years and earned his proficiency in marksmanship as a sharpshooter.

John joined the certified public accounting firm of Keisling and Associates, where he rose to managing partner of their firms in Iowa, Colorado and Wisconsin, eventually retiring after almost 40 years with the firm. John is recognized by the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs for his 60 year membership and numerous official positions supporting the organization.

John was active in his community in many capacities and in a variety of organizations: Jaycees, Rotary, Lions, Fitchburg Historical Society, and Transportation Commission. Following retirement, John worked as a greeter at Monona Terrace Convention Center and volunteered as a patient advocate at Nazareth House in Stoughton and with Dane County Humane Society.

John looked forward to spending time with his family, often going to dog parks, rooting for the Badgers, boating and watching sunsets over the Madison lakes. His love for animals, especially dogs and cats, is something he instilled in his family.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Connie Christine (Ruff) Darling, his sons Benjamin Philip, and Matthew Charles and his daughter Emilie Sybilla Shields, son-in-law, Sean Shields, granddaughters Maritza and Valeria Shields; granddogs Moses and Ruffles; and his sister, Diane (Darling) Mortensen.

A man of few words, but abundant integrity, stability, kindness, grace, and positivity, John was loved by everyone who knew him.

Please join family for a casual Celebration of Life at Memorial Union's Tripp Commons on Sunday, June 22 from 1-3 pm.
