John's obituary
John William Obbink, Jr., of Fort Worth, Texas, died on February 26, 2025. His sudden passing is mourned by his family and the community he served.
Born February 2, 1963, in Hawarden, IA, to John and Donna Obbink, John was the youngest of six children. He worked on the family farm and, as a gifted child singer, toured with three siblings as The Obbink Four, performing hundreds of concerts and recording two albums.
He met Laura Apol at Unity Christian High School, and they married while attending Dordt College together. During his medical school and residency, they had two children, Jesse and Hanna, and in 1993, John became a board-certified doctor. He served honorably in the Air Force for three years in Oklahoma City. When John and Laura separated in 1996, he settled permanently in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
John enthusiastically embraced country western culture in Fort Worth. He took up line dancing and there fell in love with Cindy Obbink (née Perry), whom he married on July 3, 2000. They built a life together on a 12-acre ranch near Benbrook, TX, where they lived with their horses.
John was a shrewd chess player and enjoyed solving puzzles of logic and spatial reasoning. His work ethic was second to none, and he maintained the ranch with an exacting standard of quality. He drove fast, laughed loudly, and delighted in teaching others.
A dedicated physician, John built and ran a private medical practice with Cindy, finishing his career with more than 3,000 active patients. He felt profound responsibility for his work; in 30 years of practice he saved hundreds of lives and improved the well-being of countless more in his care.
Being a father brought John great pride. He was intentional and passionate about shaping his children’s lives and cared for his stepchildren as his own. He was a deeply formative figure for grandchildren who grew up on the ranch.
John was a devoted husband to Cindy. For 25 years he surprised her with flowers and gifts, keeping their romance alive with weekly date nights and spontaneous acts of love.
He is predeceased by his parents, John and Donna Obbink, and his daughter, Hanna Obbink. He is survived by his siblings: Diana (Wes) Dykstra, Duane (Arlis) Obbink, Janene (Arlin) Van Gorp, Judy (Dean) Wiersma, and Valerie (Doug) Vreugdenhil; his stepchildren: Tabitha Lowery, Christin Chanel, and Phillip Kitchens; his son, Jesse Obbink; and the love of his life, Cindy Obbink.
A celebration of John’s life was held on March 16 at Stillwater Meadow in Aledo, TX. Donations in his memory are welcome at the Humane Society of North Texas.
