I'm not family or friend. Dr. John Powell was my astronomy professor during my Fall Semester of 2024. He was incredible, bright, and had so much character. Many of my peers didn't seem to understand his humor or his passion, but I could tell there was so much light in him. The love and dedication he had bled out into the world around him and was very very inspiring to me. I'm ashamed I didn't take more time to get to know him as I felt I was prompted to. And I feel honored that got to meet him and learn from him, if even for just a few months. He left a big impact on my educational career that I will forever be grateful for. And I'm absolutely heartbroken to have heard of his passing. I'm sending prayers to Dr Powell's family and friends as they mourn.

It breaks my heart to know that he is no longer with us. I was one of his students at UVU this past semester. He was a funny and caring man who always had funny jokes to share in class. My love goes out to his family.

I’m just barely finding out today but my heart goes out Professor Powell and loved ones. I happen to be one of his students in his astronomy class and I loved it. He was very lenient on taking role but that’s why I loved it, he gave many chances and was kind. Very passionate about the subjects he taught and I will miss him very much, even if I didn’t know him a personal level.
