I met John in the ReEngage marriage classes. He was so calm, kind, and thoughtful. My husband and I were newlyweds when we joined the class and we learned so much from John and Deedee. The lessons from the class has helped our marriage tremendously.

I’m so sad he had to leave us but I know he is in a much better place. He touched so many lives and marriages. God has called us to come into this world to make an impact, John has done that and he has gone to be with God. Continue to Rest In Peace.
I met John many years ago during his wife’s birthday celebration at Nordstrom. He was a kind and very pleasant man who loved his wife. John and I are Marymount alums. There was a wonderful article about his journey and the program he competed during his time in the Master’s degree program. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
I learned that your attitude gives you gratitude. John fought hard and through it all his faith did not waiver. He was not afraid to admit he was scared but he trusted God in it all. He did complain and just loved life!
In response to "What did you learn from John?"
John always provided a hearty good morning and hello in the hallways of the Ford building. He will be deeply missed, both professionally and as a joyous, supportive, and thoughtful person.
While we did not know John long, he was more than a friend to our family. He and Dee Dee took us in and made us their own. John was the quintessential man of God and a lovely person to be around. He lead with a heart of gold and a spirit of understanding. We are forever grateful for the opportunity we were given through Grace to encounter such a man. He has left a mark on our family that we will never forget and will always honor. We love you John and will continue to love on your amazing wife and family and keep them and prayer. Yours truly, Charles and Morgan
My heart goes out to John's family. He was a wonderful colleague in the Hill HR community and a wonderful man. I am grateful for his collegiality and generosity. He was so giving and helpful to so many. Thank you for sharing this tribute to him. And thank you for setting up the scholarship fund in his memory. This will allow his legacy continue. God bless you all. Sending prayers.
My sincere condolences to the McPhaul Family, I will keep you all in my prayers. I only knew Col. McPhaul professionally through our HR Leg branch interactions in the Ford House Office Building and was very saddened that such a great person and leader was taken away from this world far too soon. His professionalism, dedication to excellence and infectious energy were known to all that had the great pleasure of knowing him.
Our families were blessed to have shared so many gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas and this is how we will remember our beloved John. He was a man of faith who never wavered and a testament to what it means to live as a servant of Christ. Although because of COVID we could not be there physically, our hearts and spirits were there with you.

Although John is absent from this earth, we know that he is with our Lord. Rest well our friend, we love you always...

Mr. McPhaul was a really good man who was a great support at work. I would not have accomplished everything I did while at the AOC without him in my corner. I will always remember the help he gave me to further my career. He will be missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May you find comfort through your faith and peace knowing your love one is resting and will have eternal life with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

God will give you the strength to get through this loss.
