John Martin McGowan, 65, passed away on March 24, 2026, in Modesto, California. Born on October 16, 1960, in Oakland, California, John lived a life marked by dedication, curiosity, and pride in his work and family.
John began his journey of service and exploration as a member of the United States Air Force. Serving for four years as a Senior Airman, he took great pride in his military service and carried the values of discipline and commitment with him throughout his life. After leaving the Air Force, John embarked on a career as a truck driver. This role allowed him to travel extensively and appreciate the diverse landscapes across the country—a passion that stayed with him throughout his life.
Eventually settling into civilian life in Modesto, John joined Turlock Irrigation District (TID) as a janitor. Through hard work and determination, he advanced to become a land surveyor—a position he held with immense pride. His intelligence and love for learning were evident in his dedication to mastering math and science, which played a significant role in his professional achievements at TID.
Beyond his career, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished taking care of his home and yard, finding peace in maintaining his surroundings. His loyal dog, Jordan, was a constant companion who brought him comfort and happiness in his later years.
John’s legacy lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his three daughters: Kristen Brasiel, Tracy Sakuma, and Stefanie Dade; as well as his grandchildren: Tyler Brasiel, Ayame Sakuma, Tessa Brasiel, Aiden Sakuma, Arthur Sakuma, Stephen Dade, and Lauren Dade. His family was a source of great pride for him.
John will be remembered for his intelligence, perseverance, and devotion to both his work and loved ones. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
