It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we share that my brother, John Matthew Cortez, passed away on 12/6/2025, at home, surrounded by family.
John fought with everything he had for 7 weeks and in the end we honored his wish to come home. He didn’t just fight for himself, he fought with heart. He was a natural caretaker with the kindest, most deeply caring soul. That light never left him, not even in his final days.
John had his struggles, as so many of us do, but what always rose above everything was the way he loved people. Fiercely. Genuinely. Without conditions. And that is how we will always remember him.
There are so many people I want to thank for the love, time, prayers, support, meals, messages, visits, rides, donations and everything in between. For now, please just know how deeply grateful our family is. We ask for some grace and space as we learn how to live in a world without him.
While we trust he is now reunited with his Heavenly Father and loved ones in Heaven, that truth does not make losing him any easier.
Please help us keep John’s memory alive through stories, photos and the countless moments that made him who he was. I’ve shared a link where you can upload your photos and videos of John, which will also be used for his memorial.
We have a preliminary date set for December 20, 2025 at 1pm, followed by a celebration of life. Final details will be shared soon.
John was deeply loved. He always will be.
With love,
The Cortez Family
John Sr., Gloria and Jamie
