John Robert Mattes, a devoted husband, proud Marine, loving father, and cherished grandfather, passed away on December 20, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 74 years old.
Born on January 4, 1951, in the Bronx, New York, John was the son of the late John and Helen Mattes. He carried with him the strength and resilience of his roots throughout his life.
John proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, a service that remained a defining source of pride and honor throughout his life.
He shared 48 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Linda, building a life centered on family, loyalty, and love.
John is survived by his loving children: Dom, Richard, Craig (Fatima), and Jaclyn; his son-in-law Sal; and his daughter-in-law Liz. He was a proud and devoted grandfather and great-grandfather to many, each of whom he loved deeply and unconditionally. He is also survived by his sister Linda (Jack) and brother-in-law Ronald (Carole).
He was preceded in death by his loving and vibrant daughter, Laurie, and his daughter-in-law, Sue, who fondly nicknamed him “the Eagle.”
Affectionately known as “Pop/Poppy" John will be remembered for his strong presence, his unwavering love for his family, and his pride in being a grandfather. His legacy lives on in the generations he helped shape and the memories that will be cherished forever.
In a final act of generosity, John donated his body to science to aid in the search for a cure for cancer, reflecting his selflessness and strength even in his final days.
A memorial service will be held on May 5 at 11:00 AM at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York, where he will be honored with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Semper Fi & America’s Fund, honoring his service as a United States Marine.
