John's obituary

John Lawrence Dear.

September 27, 1955 – June 4, 2025

John Lawrence Dear passed away on June 4, 2025, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 69. Born on September 27, 1955, in Yuma, Arizona, John spent most of his life in the Fort Worth and Decatur areas.

He is survived by his children, January Shannon, Delaney Ortiz, Jordan Delaney, and John Zachary Dear; and by his sister, Ladonna Harris. He was a proud grandfather—“Poppy” to his five grandchildren: John David Dear, Grace Wall, Fiona Ortiz, Oliver Ortiz, and Logan Shannon. He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Dear and June Cary Dear, and his sister, Sharon Barton.

John was a lifelong musician whose love for music shaped much of his life. As a young man, he sang and played bass in country bands in the Fort Worth area, sharing his voice and joy wherever he performed. Later, he played in church bands and, in his final years, dedicated himself to performing in nursing homes across North Texas. With his guitar and warm voice, he brought comfort and light to elderly residents through old gospel and country songs—music that stirred memories and touched hearts.

John’s faith in God was deep and abiding. One of his favorite verses was Hebrews 11:16, which he paraphrased by saying, “Our only true home is eternity with the Lord.” That belief shaped how he lived and how he faced life’s challenges—with hope, trust, and peace. He stayed positive no matter the circumstances, often saying, “It’ll all work out!” because he truly believed Jesus was waiting for him on the other side and that God had a plan for his life.

John was also a man of resourcefulness and independence. He took pride in doing things himself—growing his own food, fixing what others might throw away, and solving problems with creativity and determination. He was vibrant, upbeat, personable, and fun to be around. He loved his family deeply and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Sunday June 29, 2025 at Freedom Church located at 3972 Southwest Blvd, Fort Worth, TX 76116.
