John's obituary
John George “Big John” Jammal passed away on March 9, 2024 at the age of 71 in Austin, Texas, surrounded by his family. Over the last year, he fought pancreatic cancer with bravery, strength, and dignity. His faith in Jesus Christ, love of his family, and his stubbornness to never give up helped him in his courageous battle.
John was born on February 24, 1953 in Houston, Texas. He was the second child and first son of Madelyne and John Joseph Jammal. John attended Holy Ghost Catholic School and St. Cecilia Catholic School, graduating from Memorial High School in 1971. He completed his BS at The University of Texas at Austin in 1975. John was a devoted father, beloved son, supportive brother, and fun-loving uncle, who was close to his cousins and a great friend to many. He loved to get family and friends together, and the humor he found in everyday life created memories that are cherished and relived, often. John was a member of the HLSR and the Houston Farm and Ranch Club. He was a proud UT graduate, but even prouder that his children followed in his footsteps. John never missed a Longhorn football game, and was the epitome of, “Come early, be loud, stay late, wear orange.” His love for his Lebanese heritage was unrivaled, and he took great joy in preparing his mother’s Lebanese recipes. He was a member of The United Jamail Club, and often attended the Southern Federation of Syrian Lebanese American Clubs conventions. John leaves us with so many life lessons, memories and fun times that we will cherish and hold deep in our hearts. He will be greatly missed.
John is survived by his son John (Angel) Jammal, daughter Lynnsie (Andrew) Brosco, grandsons Arlo and Miko Brosco, the mother of his children, Barb (Tim) Kamstra, siblings Sharon Gaylord, Dwayne (Loretta) Jammal, Cory Jammal, Janine (Dean) Hildebrand McBride, Darlene (Marcus) McElhannon, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his mother Madelyne Jamail Jammal, father John Jammal, brother Kevin Jammal, and brothers-in-law Pete Gaylord and Stan Hildebrand.
John’s family is grateful for the love and support we received, as well as the medical care provided by Baylor St. Luke’s Houston. A funeral service will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Drive, Houston TX 77024 on March 21, 2024, at 10:30 am. Following the service there will be a celebration of life with details to be announced at the funeral service.
