John (Jack)'s obituary

John Matthew McMullen (Jack) was born November 6, 1937 to Florence Gertrude (Vellenga) McMullen and Joseph Gerald McMullen at Bellefontaine, Ohio. He was the third of fourteen children in the family:

Sandra Marie (Deceased); Eleanor Jane (Deceased); Nancy Grace (Deceased); Thomas of Salem, Oregon; Ruth Ann Borchers of Tucson, Arizona; Joseph of Greenville, South Carolina; Paul of New Albany,Ohio; Carl of Columbus, Ohio; Mark (Deceased); Robert of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Pat of Worthington, Ohio; Fred of Westerville, Ohio; Tim of Tucson, Arizona.

John was married to Reba Laverne McMullen (Deceased) December 10 1961 with four children Kathy Gomez-Borjon, Debbie Kepley (Deceased), Marsha Kepley Pesonen (Deceased), Daphne McMullen-Jimenez.

John graduated from Bellefontaine (Ohio) High School in the Class of

1955. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea as a Gaguide Missiles expert. He served in the Army from 1955 to 1958.

He relocated to Antioch, California, in 1958. He was very active in the Antioch post 6435 VFW for many years, rising to the rank of Quarter Master.

He was employed by the City of Antioch from 1965 to 1995. He was an

avid out-doors person, hunting, fishing and camping throughout California, along with many cross country trips.

He will be missed by the many people he helped and befriended in his very active life.

He is survived by his daughters Kathy Gomez-Borjon, and Daphne McMullen-Jimenez. His grand children Tessy Martinez-Monjes, Shanelle Martinez, Daniel Borjon, Sophia Dunlap, Gina Silva,  Jimmy Pesonen (Deceased). Anthony Riso, Heather Riso-Michaels, John McMullen, Courtney McMullen-Moyer . William McMullen-Moyer. and 35 Great Grandchildren. 

John lived his life his way. He touched and changed so many lives by his actions, words of wisdom and straight talk along with the opportunities he offered to others. He did this in his everyday life and along with the work he did with the VFW. He spent over 40 years working with Veterans which he was very proud of along with the happiness he enjoyed doing it.

He was able to see our country in a way very few people have. Traveling and camping outdoors in so many States. Hunting, Fishing spending time outdoors. That was his way of life. He never made any excuses for it or how he lived.

He was a strong man and had tremendous amount of will. He fought until the end regardless of the pain. Reba came to take him home and for him it was his time.

John will be missed by so many as he was so Loved!!

A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held in Celebration March 25, 2023 Saturday at the Antioch Post 6435 815 Fulton Shipyard Rd VFW. Come with stories to tell.
