John's obituary

John Harold Melvin, 71, of Akron, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on October 23, 2025.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. Melvin and Ann (Smith) Melvin.

He is survived by his daughter, Kristy (Michael) Bennett, and his son, Joshua Melvin. Loving grandfather to Mercedes, Kaitlin (Conner),  Malachi, Angelina, Scarlett, Daniel (DJ), and Noah; and great-grandfather to Isabella, Alexander, and Zoey. He is also survived by his brother, Keith (Elaine) Melvin, and sisters, Brenda (Delbert) Yoder.

John was a hardworking man who spent many years at General Metals Powder Company (GMP) as a die caster before retiring. In his free time, he enjoyed painting the model cars he built—a hobby that brought him great joy and peace. He also loved his Dodge Challenger and enjoyed showing it at car shows, sharing his passion with fellow car enthusiasts.

He was a volunteer for the Akron Civic Theatre for many years during his retirement, where he got to enjoy his love of music and concerts. He also worked at the Haunted Opera House earlier in his life, helping to bring joy and excitement to the community.

John was proud to have been an Eagle Scout with Troop 317 and later went on to serve as a Scout Master, guiding and inspiring the next generation of scouts with his knowledge and dedication.

He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love for his family, and the simple pleasures he found in life’s little moments.

A celebration of life will be held at Oak Hill Presbyterian Church

2406 Ardwell Ave, Akron, OH 44312

November 15th at 1pm

This is not a black tie or funeral attire celebration! Wear what is comfortable my dad was an old time hippie rocker!
