John Edward “Nick” Gottshall was born May 1, 1938, and passed away on January 8, 2026, lived a full and meaningful life marked by service, perseverance, and generosity of spirit. He was the beloved son of Warren and Regina Gottshall, who preceded him in death, and the brother of David Gottshall, also deceased.
Nick is survived by his daughter, Janet Trijo (Rick); his cherished granddaughters, Brandi Schoonmaker (Chris), Alexis Trijo, Angela Trijo (Scott), and Kim Thacker (Herb); and his adored great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Olivia, Caleb, Delilah, Marley, Katie, Heather, Robbie, and Rachel. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Nick was lovingly known as “Pappy,” a name that reflected the warmth, guidance, and unconditional love he gave so freely.
A lifelong resident of Alexandria, Virginia, Nick built a varied and adventurous career, including work on Capitol Hill, and ultimately retired from government service. His professional life reflected his curiosity, dedication, and willingness to embrace new challenges.
On April 20, 1981, Nick joined Alcoholics Anonymous, a decision that profoundly shaped the rest of his life. For the next 44 years, he was a steady source of encouragement and support, helping countless friends and family members reclaim their lives and maintain sobriety. His quiet strength, humility, honesty, and compassion left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Nick experienced life fully, including two marriages and many work adventures. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, resilience, unwavering dedication to helping others, and the deep love he held for his family. A man of faith, Nick found strength and purpose in his beliefs, trusting in God’s grace and striving to live a life of service and kindness. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and in the generations that follow him.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the Basilica of Saint Mary, located at 310 S. Royal Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. A reception will follow at the Franconia Moose Lodge, 7701 Beulah Road, Alexandria, VA 22315.
A special meeting in Nick’s honor will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the Serenity Club, 8121 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22309, for all friends in recovery.
