In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to John Galvin Memorial Fund.

Background

Donations to this fundraiser will be distributed in support of three causes important in John's life: advancing the care of patients suffering with hematologic malignancies, supporting Chicago Youth Programs and his Early Exposures photography program, and the Lincoln Park Conservancy where a memorial bench dedication is planned.

John dedicated his professional life to caring for patients needing hematopoetic stem cell transplantation (usually a treatment for leukemia or lymphoma), especially those suffering with graft versus hold disease (GVHD). The Cowden foundation is devoted to patients and caregivers who have lived through GVHD. He has been very involved in this foundation and supporting advocacy efforts. The Bone Marrow and Cancer Foundation is a support organization that has done tremendous work to support patients, caregivers, and research. Donations will support both charities in John's name.

Long passionate about the potential benefits of photography education for youth, in medical school John founded the Early Exposures (EE) Program in partnership with The Chicago Youth Programs (CYP). This was a project initiated to promote a child’s inherent creativity and expression through photography. For 22 years John has worked as active director of the program, which teachers Chicago youth from 3 different sites in the city, culminating in a celebratory exhibit every year in late summer. www.earlyexposures.org
Donations will support keeping this important program going in the years ahead.

Finally, John's family lives in Lincoln Park and cherish their proximity to park where the family has so many memories with John, especially the South Pond area. A memorial bench is planned to provide a warm place for frequent remembering and keeping John's presence with us over the years. The bench dedication involves a charitable donation to the Lincoln Park Conservancy, a cause which was dear to John and his family.
