John's obituary
John was born in Seattle, Washington, but raised in Monroe, Washington. The oldest of six children, he had in his youth a penchant for exploring sciences, mathematics, music, and upon occasion, the dynamics of exploding pressure vessels. He explored both country life, hunting for frogs in ponds and wandering the woods near his home in Monroe, and the intellectual life, pursuing calculus and engineering. He played piano and trombone, and enjoyed Jazz and the ‘Prog Rock’ bands of his youth.
He graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Later in his life he obtained a Master degree in Electric Engineering at University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and finally a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington.
He spent much of his 30 year career developing signal and image processing algorithms, and developed multiple
patents in medical imaging technologies. He continued his interest in music, and learned harmonica. Later in his life he developed a love of kayaking to the point of moving to a home across from Green Lake where he could paddle on a daily basis. He occasionally competed in kayak races, and even dared the Deception Pass Challenge.
John was a life-long Roman Catholic, and always maintained a fierce work-ethic and a strong sense of duty to his family. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, HongPhuc Nguyen, and children XuanMai, and Tai, and his five siblings and mother.
Attendance at his funeral Mass will be by invitation only, but live-streamed on Facebook by St. John the Evangelist Parish https://www.facebook.com/StJo… at 10:30am on November 5, 2020. You do not need a Facebook account to stream the Mass.
He will be interred at Holyrood Cemetery in Shoreline, Washington
