John's obituary

John J. Fitzgerald Jr., 80, of Wayne, a former Radnor Township police officer and court clerk for Delaware County, died of kidney failure Sunday at home.

For 16 years, Mr. Fitzgerald was a juvenile officer with the Radnor police. He enjoyed supporting teens and getting young people on track to a successful life, his family said.

After leaving the force in the late 1960s, Mr. Fitzgerald worked in several positions before becoming a clerk in the Delaware County Courthouse in Media. He retired in 1990 after 20 years with the court.

Mr. Fitzgerald graduated from Radnor High School. In 1947 he married Dolores Fisher, who babysat for his next-door neighbors.

An avid sportsman, he organized softball games for the Police Department when he was on the force, his wife said, and managed a youth baseball team in Wayne when their children were growing up.

He was always supportive of his children and his grandchildren, she said, driving them to school, helping them with homework, and attending all their sporting events.

He was a homebody, she said, and surprised everyone when he took her on a cruise for her birthday several years ago.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Fitzgerald is survived by sons John and Mickey; a daughter, Barbara Schoellkopf; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at St. Katharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 104 S. Aberdeen Ave., Wayne, where a Funeral Mass will be said at 10:30. Mr. Fitzgerald's grandparents helped found the church in 1893. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
