John's obituary

John E. Ward, 79, of Southaven, MS, passed away on October 29, 2024. Born on August 14, 1945 in Chipley, FL, John dedicated his life to his faith, his family, and his country.

John graduated from Northeast Lauderdale Highschool in Meridian, MS and later furthered his education at East Mississippi Junior College in Scooba, MS where he played football. John served in the United States Army for two years, including one year in Vietnam. After his service, John had a long career in the transportation industry. He retired from FedEx Freight in 2012 after 18 years.

He was a man of faith and patriotism, with a "Never Give Up" attitude that he applied to every aspect of his life. John was also an avid woodworker, a hobby that filled his heart with joy to share his creations with friends and family.

John is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Nancy Ward; children, Jason (Misty) Ward and Brad (Jennifer) Ward`; grandchildren, Carrie (Michael) Schiedegger, Garrett (Ashley) Ward, Erica (Kirby) Weakley, and Lauren Ward; great-grandchildren, Lainey and Luke Schiedegger, and Rowan and Rush Ward; sister, Sue (James) Michael; and brother, Danny (Laurie) Hicks. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby S. Hicks and Floyd W. Hicks.

Memorial services will be held at Gray's Creek Baptist Church in Hernando, MS on Tuesday, November 12th. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:00 am, followed by services at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Memphis, TN.

John will be remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose legacy of love and perseverance will forever inspire those who knew him.
