John's obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Gilbert Coulter. He passed on 11/5/2022. John (58) was born on June 16, 1964 in Stoughton, MA.

John undertook studies at Berklee College of Music with an emphasis on piano performance, composition, and electronic music. He went on to build and operate a recording studio at the Pearl Street Arts Complex. Several of John’s pop songs received radio air play.

As a professional flautist, John was a founding member of the chamber ensemble “Sounds and Seasons” which performed for various events in the Boston area including cultural

festivals, wedding celebrations and political fund raisers. He’s performed with members of the Boston Symphony, N.Y. Philharmonic and the Handel and Haydn Society. His original compositions include chamber music, songs for solo voice, choral and orchestral works. His work has been premiered at Harvard’s Art First Festival and Boston’s historic King’s Chapel.

John was also an audio and lighting technician. He contributed to various musical and theater productions including the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, the Landmark Orchestra and Emmanuel Music’s staging of Handel’s “Hercules in Love” featuring Lorraine Hunt Lieberson.

John also was a designer and woodworker. One of his cherished projects was the construction of a podium for Emmanuel Music from which a number of prominent directors have conducted including Seiji Ozawa, John Harrison and Christopher Hogwood.

He had a love for poetry and admired the works of Robert Frost. His poetry has been featured in local papers as well as the annual poetry festival in Randolph, VT.

John was also a general contractor who was involved with many restoration and renovation projects including the historic Church of the Covenant, the brownstones of Louisburg Square and the Brattleboro Street mansions.

John is survived by his brother, sister, sister in law, two nieces, and great niece. He will forever be missed and cherished in our hearts. John loved Jesus Christ. 

Services for John Gilbert Coulter will be held at First United Presbyterian Church of Cambridge on Dec 3, 2022 at 3 pm.
