John's obituary

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of John Marvin Earl Chachere. He died in his sleep of natural causes on the morning of Tuesday, February 25th in Portland, Oregon. He was 55 years old.

John was born in 1969 and raised in Berkeley, California, the son of Marvin and Joan Chachere. He spent a year in the People’s Republic of China with his family in 1982-3. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1987 and attended the University of California at Santa Cruz. He went on to receive several advanced degrees from Stanford University.

He had a distinguished career as a management consultant, working for Oracle, NASA, and Bridgewater Associates. He was deeply inspired by encounters with Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama, and he was a committed vegetarian and vegan for most of his life. He was dedicated to a number of political causes, including reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights, and the Palestinian cause.

John loved music and dancing. He was a former Deadhead, a former Burner. With his unique sense of fashion, his quick smile, and openness to all, he never failed to make a marked impression on those he met. He was generous to a fault, had a quirky sense of humor, and was stunningly brilliant at synthesizing ideas, analyzing systems, and solving problems.

He is survived by two wonderful sons, Luke and Logan, his mother Joan, his brother David, and his step-brother Phil. He had many friends around the country, particularly in Seattle and the Bay Area.- Dave Chachere
