Joaquin's obituary

Joaquin Clarencio Reyes, 17, of Sonoma, CA, passed away tragically young on November 1, 2021. Joaquin was born on December 24, 2003, to Kara Olness Reyes and Ricardo Reyes in Sonoma.  Joaquin attended Flowery Elementary, Adele Harrison Middle School, and was most recently in his Senior year at Sonoma Valley High School.  He is described by those who knew him well as highly intelligent, kind, respectful, funny, tall, inquisitive, attractive, athletic, genuine, quick-witted, and always loved an impassioned debate.  Joaquin was raised bilingual and bicultural and he was proud of his multiracial heritage. He was passionate about and had a keen talent for music, he often enjoyed recreating melodic beats and harmonies on his own and sharing them among friends.  Joaquin also loved studying numerous topics in and out of school, such as;  history, sciences, evolution, politics, current and world events.
He was a straight A student, even making the Superintendent’s Honor Roll his entire junior year.
While on summer breaks, he enjoyed working as a line cook at Delicious Dish, traveling to Mexico and Canada, and volunteering for local health fairs, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his many friends. Joaquin was enthusiastic about basketball and would oftentimes be found shooting hoops in the dark. Playing basketball since the age of 10, his hard work paid off last year when he made the Varsity Basketball team.  Throughout his life, he also played baseball, football, soccer, track and field, and learned to snowboard, skateboard and surf.  He was always willing to try anything. Joaquin made his parents very proud in everything he did.  Joaquin’s memory will forever be cherished by his mom Kara, dad Ricardo, little brother Benicio, aunt Maricarmen Reyes, uncle Alex Reyes, abuelos María and Francisco Reyes, of Sonoma, beloved dogs George and Clover, great aunts Peggy Tunkis of Sonoma, Patty Scheel of Dallas, TX and Edie Ferguson of Reno, NV, many cousins, coaches, teachers and of course his many friends.  He has joined his adoring grandparents Rolf and Lee Jay Olness in Heaven. The family requests that donations be made to Joaquin’s Memorial Scholarship fund found on the everloved.com website.

There will be a Memorial Service at St. Francis Solano Church on Monday 11/22 at 1pm followed by Reception at Gundlach Bundschu Winery at 2:15pm.
