Joan's obituary
Joan Hannah Pies was born January 17, 1947, to Homer and Hannah (Halvorson) Pies in Brainerd, MN. She attended and graduated from Pequot Lakes School. She continued her education with attendance of beauty school where she she became a hair dresser. She was employed for several years at the Butcher Block and the VFW of Pequot Lakes as well as doing some freelance work as a merchandiser for companies like Philip Morris. In later years, she moved to Minneapolis where she worked for the Hilton as a PBX operator until she retired.
Joan passed away after a valiant battle with cancer, on Monday, January 19th, 2026 at the Maplewood Rehab Center where she was receiving hospice care after a lovely day of celebrating her birthday with friends on January 17th.
On July 2, 1973 Joan gave birth to a son whom she raised as a single mom. Joan never married. Her love was with her family and community that she was very active in. Her volunteer activities included work for SACA and a variety of fundraising activities in the community.
Joan's free time was filled with taking care of her dog, Angel (Poppy); traveling with friends, Red Hats, beading projects, painting, and games with friends. She especially loved music, going to We Fest, and Christmas and valued time spent with her son and daughter-in-law, grandson, and nieces and nephews. In her younger days, she enjoyed racing cars and dancing as well.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Hannah; grandparents, brothers Homer Jr, Harvey, Howard and sister Lorie, niece Darla and nephew Michael.
She is survived by her son Brandon (Jayde) of Staples; grandson David, great-grandson Joneleth; aunt Shirley Robideaux of Pequot Lakes; many nieces and nephews; and more friends than can be named.
