Joan's obituary

Joan Horowitz, aged 81 years, born September 20, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY passed away peacefully on the 5th of March, 2024. A woman of strong character and generous heart, Joan was greatly loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.

She leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor her life's legacy. She is survived by her daughter Robin Coleman, and her sons, Steve and Warren Horowitz. They and their memories will continue to keep her spirit alive.

Being raised in New York, Joan watched her mom play Mahjong and Rummy before becoming a savvy player herself. She enjoyed playing Mahjong with her friends and Rummy with her kids. In addition to playing games, she also learned how to sew from her friends in the quilting club in Kings Point. Joan made many quilts for her sons, daughter, and the women's shelter. She also was an avid crotcheter and made the most precious baby blankets and sweaters for her kid's friends' babies.

Being a single parent was challenging with three children, but Joan persevered and had a significant career with the police department and retired from federal law enforcement as a criminal analyst in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms department. She was an integral part of the team in Phoenix, AZ.

Joan had a unique taste in her choice of foods including her love for Chinese and Mexican food to Red Lobster's biscuits and all you can eat shrimp. Many a night you would catch her grabbing a dark chocolate Dove candy or an Italian cookie which were among her favorites.

An avid traveler, Joan visited China with her kids for her son's best friend's wedding as well as enjoyed time in Shanghai at the World’s Fair. Her fondness of Panda bears was so great she made a second trip to Chengdu, China where the panda reserve is located, to see them in person and up close. In addition to China, she enjoyed Europe heading to Italy twice, once with her son and for her 60th birthday she went with her daughter. She also traveled throughout the United States, including a trip to San Francisco with her sons for her retirement celebration.

Joan was often seen taking her three-year-old dog Ping, the sweetest Shih Tzu, for long strolls. She created many new life-long friends this way. Throughout her life she had many pets including her beloved cats Zoe, Sophie and Freddy, as well as Teddy her previous Shih Tzu and Elvis the cockatiel.

A compassionate soul, Joan was involved with various causes including the ASPCA, WWF, and Women's Shelters. She believed in making a positive impact wherever she could, and advocated passionately for these causes.

In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates any donations made to the "World Wildlife Fund". Contributions can be made at the following link: https://everloved.com/life-of…. These funds will be directed towards a cause Joan held dear to her heart.

Joan's vibrant spirit, generous nature, and rich life will be remembered by all. As we bid her farewell, we take solace in the fact that she is resting in peace.
