Joan's obituary

Joan G. Hassard, age 93, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at the Chelsea at Warren, surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Jersey City, Joan moved to Plainfield when first married, then to Fanwood for several years before moving to Warren in 1973.

After graduating from Holy Family in Bayonne, Joan earned a full scholarship to the New York University School of Music for Vocal Performance in 1948.

Joan was a homemaker and a gourmet cook. She worked for Basking Ridge High School as a secretary for ten years before her retirement and later went on to earn her real estate license.

Joan’s love for music was a common theme throughout her life. Beginning with the scholarship to NYU School of Music, and then as a former member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in North Plainfield, where she was an active member of their choir. Joan was also a charter member of the global singing group Sweet Adeline’s Plainfield chapter in 1952. When her children were younger, Joan was a girl scout troop leader and volunteered at both the Warren Rescue Squad and the Township Library. Joan received her certification as a Master Gardener and used that to volunteer at the Rutgers University Horticulture hotline.

Joan is predeceased by her husband, Robert Hassard, her son Thomas Hassard and her daughter Linda Hassard.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Voltz and her husband, Tom, and Carol Bailey, and four grandchildren, Sean and Dylan Voltz and Erin and Grace Bailey.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 20th at 11:00am at the First Congregational Church, 125 Elmer St, Westfield, NJ 07090.

Memorial donations may be made in her loving memory to New Jersey Conservation Foundation which supports urban agriculture at www.njconservation.org.
