Joan's obituary

Joan Ann Franklin passed away on March 19, 2018. Although Joan fought and won her battle with cancer, her body was just not able to endure the long-term side effects of her treatment. Joan was born in San Mateo, California on August 27, 1952 and attended St. Gregory’s Elementary School and Hillsdale High School, graduating in 1970. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Art History at Humboldt State University in 1974. After years working in the restaurant industry, she became the office manager at James E. Phillips, C. P. A. in 2000.
Joan was a creative and passionate artist who loved to dance, take long walks at the beach and spend time with her family and friends. One of her greatest joys was visiting the museums in Paris and Monet Gardens in Giverny, France. She was a sensitive and empathic person who could never understand the injustices in the world. Joan always saw the best in everyone and made friends wherever she went. No matter how hard things got or how much pain she was in, she always appreciated those who were kind to her and referred to them as her “little lottos.” She loved the holidays and never failed to decorate, no matter what the occasion; this included the restaurants she worked at and Jim’s office. She never forgot her friend’s or family’s birthdays and everyone always looked forward to their cards and gifts, wrapped beautifully with ribbon, handmade bows and stickers.
Joan was loved deeply and will be missed by so many of her family and friends, including her brother, Michael Franklin, and sisters Patricia Stuermer and Valerie Franklin, her dear niece and nephews Ceylon Baginski, Wil Franklin (Liz), Brooks Franklin (Camille) and Eli Baginski and her cousins Dee Dee Dellos, Barbara Rosson Davis and Ron & Kathy Kalinin. Joan was very thankful for her close friends who include Bethann Tally, Sally Keane & Paula Moore (the “St. Greg’s girls”), Wendy Blaine (her BFF), Jim Phillips, Kathy McFarland, Barbara Eckley and Mike & Robin Fogli. A very special thank you to her dear neighbor Michelle, who was there for Joanie at the very end, her “special healer” Paula Burns and Lisa & Janice Armento for all of their help, love and support. Joan is also survived by many other family members and friends; she cherished all of you and I’m sure would have liked for us to include each and every one of you by name, but the list is just too long.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Leona Marie Franklin Galten and Wilfred Abrahm Franklin, her dear friends Susan, Tommy and Peanut, and many other beloved relatives and friends.
A Prayer of the Faithful mass will be held at St. Gregory’s church on July 1st, 2018 at 11:30 followed by a Celebration of Life at Coyote Point Recreation Area (Eucalyptus Picnic Areas 1 and 2) in San Mateo, California at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan’s memory to the American Cancer Society or the Cancer Support Community.
