Joan's obituary

Joan Ellen (Burttram) Carlisle, aged 70, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

Joan was born on December 11, 1953 to Bill and Velcie Burttram of Springville, Alabama. Joan was proceeded in death by her mother and father, sister Joyce Burttram Voelzke (Springville, AL) and is survived by husband, Terry Carlisle (Birmingham, AL), brother, Tim (Dawn) Burttram (Jonesboro, AR), brother-in-law Denny (Patsy) Carlisle (Birmingham, AL) and sister-in-law Sharon Lampkin (Birmingham, AL). Nieces and nephews in the Carlisle and Burttram family, and great nieces and great nephews in the Carlisle, Rea, and Voelzke families.

Joan graduated from Ashville High School (Ashville, AL). She had a very long affiliation with the University of Alabama at Birmingham having earned Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN), Master of Science Nursing (MSN), and Doctorate of Philosophy Nursing degrees.

Joan was a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, and a Registered Professional Nurse. Joan held positions such as Associate Professor at the University of West Georgia (Carrollton, GA), Department Director, Surpora Thomas Pediatric Nursing Education & Research Center (Children’s of Alabama, Birmingham), Assistant Professor, Graduate Studies Coordinator, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Option (UAB), Assistant Professor, Graduate Studies, Coordinator, Pediatric & Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Options (UAB). Joan was author of numerous publications related to the health profession.

Joan was a member of Shades Valley Lutheran Church in Birmingham. She helped initiate and lead the Fishes & Loaves Ministry. The family is asking in lieu of flowers to make a donation to the Fishes & Loaves in her honor (https://www.shadesvalleyluthe…) Funeral services will be conducted at Shades Valley Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 14th at 11:00am CST.
