Joan's obituary

Joan D. Boland, 84, of Portsmouth, NH passed away in her home on August 22, 2022.

She was born August 10, 1938 in Everett, MA, the daughter of the late Louis Max Gilman and Marguerite (Goodwin) Sheehan.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Foley (Jack).

She fell in love, and was married to Edwin Joseph Boland from 1960 until his death in 2008.

She relocated from Quincy, MA to Portsmouth, NH in 2010.

Joan was a homemaker for many years, then attended nursing school, graduating in 1979 as a LPN.

She continued her nursing and healthcare education, graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1991.

She worked in a variety of positions in hospitals, private care, and homeless shelters in and around the Boston, MA area, until her retirement.

She thoroughly enjoyed living in Portsmouth. She was a self-appointed seeker of the best coffee shop or Italian restaurant the Seacoast and surrounding area had to offer.

She will be greatly missed for her sense of humor, her infectious laughter, and her enduring love of family.

Joan is survived by her daughters Marguerite (Margot) Darby, Christine Boland, Rachel Bothe (Jason), and Jennifer Boland (Chris); granddaughters Justine Johnson (Nick); and Britney Fucci (Joe); grandson Joseph Bothe; great-grandsons James Petto and Barron Johnson; great-granddaughter Blair Johnson; niece Kali Foley (Angie); grand-niece Ziva LaPoint.

A devout Catholic, Joan was a member of Portsmouth’s Corpus Christi Parish.

At Joan’s request, there will be no visiting hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 am on September 8, 2022 at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842. A light luncheon will follow at a local establishment and all family and friends are invited to attend. The interment of her ashes with her husband will be held at another time and will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church or The Saint Vincent de Paul Society
