Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada, Daughter of the late Kenneth Patterson and Dora (Jones) Allen.
Joan attended Amherst Regional High School then Acadia University where she graduated in 1953 with a B.Sc with honors. After receiving a Masters degree in science from Penn State in 1955 she worked as a nutritionist at University of Delaware, was an instructor of home economics at the University …
