Jimmy's obituary

In Loving Memory of Jimmy Dale Satter April 19, 1949 – July 11, 2025

Jimmy Dale Satter, a man of extraordinary strength, wisdom, and heart, passed away on July 11, 2025, surrounded by love and light. In his final moments, he was held in a circle of peace by his wife, Tonda Adams, his daughter, Kristian Smith and his niece, Denise Sanchez—an intimate farewell that reflected the deep bonds he nurtured throughout his life.

Born on April 19, 1949 in Salem, OR and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Jimmy lived a life defined not by accolades or titles, but by the relationships he built and the love he gave. He was a fighter to the very end, enduring pain with quiet resilience and an unyielding willpower that inspired everyone around him.

Jimmy is now reunited with his beloved sister, Shirley Rugg (April 17, 1948 – October 1, 2019), whose memory remained close to his heart. Their shared laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support for one another were a testament to the strength of family.

Jimmy was a man of many words—literally. He could turn a casual sidewalk chat into a spirited hour-long conversation, captivating anyone with his curiosity and insight. Though he didn’t complete college, he was one of the most intelligent and informed people you could ever meet. His enthusiasm for learning was contagious, and his ability to speak thoughtfully on nearly any topic left many in awe.

But above all, Jimmy prided himself on being a father. He raised three children on his own, embracing both the roles of mother and father with grace and devotion. Every Mother’s Day, his children made sure to honor him—not just as a dad, but as the nurturing, steadfast figure who never let them feel alone. He had a rare gift for listening without judgment, always making space for others to share their truth. One of his final words to his daughter, Kristian, was a simple, powerful expression of gratitude: “Thank you for always including me. Thank you for allowing me in your life.”

Jimmy’s legacy lives on through his four children: Tamara Smith, Kristian Smith, Aaron Satter, and Ashley Lanoie-DeHaven; and his seven grandchildren: Xavier, Gage, and Adisyn Bland; Keitan and Kai Smith; and Astrid and Imogen Smith. Each of them carries forward his spirit—his wisdom, his humor, and his unwavering love.

One of the most profound aspects of Jimmy’s journey was his commitment to sobriety. June 13, 2025 marked his 33rd Sobriety Birthday—a milestone he celebrated more than his own birthday. Though he was unable to speak to his AA community this year, the impact of his mentorship and support will continue to ripple through the lives he touched. His devotion to the practice of spirituality became a cornerstone of his sobriety journey, guiding him through challenges and deepening his connection to himself and others.

Jimmy Dale Satter was the best kind of father, friend, and human being. He never let his children give up on their dreams. He showed us what strength truly looks like. And he reminded us, even in his final words, of the power of gratitude and love.

One of his favorite quotes was: "Argue for your limitations and, sure enough, they're yours." — Richard Bach, Illusions

He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always cherished.
