In Memory of my Uncle James,
We had a lot of family reunions, full of so many people. You were always at a table telling stories and laughing and smoking just like all the adults. I remember you singing and playing the guitar for us at these reunions. You were very talented!  You and your sisters (including my mom) would play cards for hours.
I remember you trying to teach me how to play golf and I showed up with one ball and 3 clubs one time. I was so proud that I didn’t lose that one ball. But it took 5 hours to play. Lois and Les would be sitting under a tree waiting for me to get the golf ball in the hole. Finally you just asked me to drive the golf cart but I am not sure I was good at that either but it was fun.
I remember you coming out to California to visit me on your way to see your mom. You were the only one that wanted to see her to forgive her and have closure after she put all of you in an orphanage. I remember thinking how brave your were to do that.
After my dad died, I could think of only one person I wanted to give me away at my wedding and that was you! My Uncle James! That was such a wonderful time to have you, Aunt Margaret, and Danny and his family join Tom and I in celebrating that day!
I remember the Owen reunion at your house when Ashley was only 4 months old. Aunt Margaret made some glorious meals for us!! That was a great time as we all went to the Houston Space Center and to Galveston to see the beach so I could wave to the ocean! You and Uncle Les were always so good to me.
I remember coming to your house when I had a case to try or a mediation. You told me a few stories about being in the 82nd Airborne and how you advanced to instructor very quickly. You and Aunt Margaret were always so kind to me allowing me to stay with you and treating me to dinner.
I remember bringing the kids down for Lego Brick Fiesta and Aunt Margaret showing Grant her love for race cars. You gave my mom a book about a cure for diabetes that you had used with great results! Alas mom loved her sweets too and I don’t believe she read it but I still have the book!
I remember your 50th wedding anniversary party. You and Aunt Margaret are loved by so many!
I was so excited that you and Troy and Danny came down just 2 years ago to see my mom for her 90th birthday celebration.
These are only a few of my treasured memories of you.
And then our last and final visit before you met Jesus in Heaven. You were having such a wonderful day! You looked great and I so enjoyed talking to you. You were once again making your "one liner jokes" about almost everything I asked. Here is what you told me:
*That the biggest gun I ever shot in the military was the 106 MM gun on a jeep to shoot at tanks.
*As a paratrooper, all the guys liked me so they just had me train them.
*No time to be scared when jumping out of a plane.
Me: "My dad didn’t talk about his time in the Marines. Do you talk about your paratrooper days?" You replied, "Why talk about them, they are over."
Me: "Did you have shoot or kill anyone?" You replied, "No and if I did I wouldn't talk about it."
Me: "I heard that you once had a locker right next to Arnold Palmer, you must have been really good."  You replied, "That was just because it was in alphabetical order." Owens - Palmer
Your best golf score was 67 and your favorite place to play was Myrtle Beach
Your favorite food is steak but you said, "It is hard to eat when you don’t have your teeth in."
I could not leave your side that day. I believe the Holy Spirit gave me those 4 hours just so I could be in your presence one last time.
I loved you Uncle James!  I know that you are in Heaven.
Remember to tell my Dad we miss him and love him.
Your niece,
Tami
I have had the pleasure of living next door to Mr. and Mrs. Owens for 31 years. During this time, the Owens have truly been neighbors that our family will treasure for ever. No matter what time of day or night it was, if my air conditioner or heating unit required service, Mr. Owens always made sure to assist with regaining a comfortable home environment; no matter the time or day.

I can still see and feel his Gentle Spirit and Neighborly, Hand Waving, gesture; which will always be remembered.

I wholeheartedly miss my beloved friends.

You are truly missed but never forgotten. Rest in Eternal Peace Mr. Owens.

Mrs. Owens, May God Bless and comfort you and the family during this time.

Prayers and Love,
Bonnie, Markeya, and the Grandchildren
I am a horrible golfer. Most of my contact with Jim was at his home, most often around the holidays. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to hear Jim play his guitar. He may have loved golf more. But that guitar had to be a close second. Jim was a very ethical man who loved and put his family before everything. He always had a smile on his face when he was with them. I will always remember when my cousin Mathew spilled a gallon of paint in Margaret and Jim's bedroom. When he called I said, "You spilled a gallon of paint on Paula's Mom and Dad's bedroom floor"!
In response to "When was the last time you spent time with Jim?"
