Jim's obituary
James “Jim” Alkire
1973 – 2025
Jim Alkire, a beloved friend, brother, son, and cherished member of the coastal community, passed away on March 22nd at the age of 52. Known for his easy smile, contagious laughter, generous spirit, and deep love for the ocean, Jim lived life with intention, heart, and a quiet strength that left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Jim was born in 1973, and made an impact in every community he entered. He was an intentional, loving and loyal husband and father before all else. The ocean wasn’t just a place he loved — it was home. As a lifelong surfer, he found both peace and freedom in the waves, and his passion for the sea was something he joyfully shared with everyone around him. Whether teaching a beginner to catch their first wave or paddling out at dawn in the OBX to greet the sunrise, Jim’s presence in the water was magnetic.
He had a rare gift for connection. Grounded, kind, and effortlessly authentic, Jim made people feel seen and valued. His laugh echoed like sunshine, and his friendships ran deep — built on loyalty, honesty, and shared moments of both joy and challenge.
“Mightier than the waves of the sea is His love for you.”
— Psalm 93:4
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 5th at 2:00 PM at Little Island Park in Sandbridge, Virginia Beach. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Jim — to share stories, laughter, and love in the place he held so dear.
A paddle out to honor Jim’s life and legacy is also being planned for this summer, with details to be shared in the coming months.
Jim is deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. His spirit lives on in the tides, the surf, and the hearts of all who knew and cherished him.
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
— Psalm 23:6
