Jerry's obituary
An outdoor gathering to honor Jerry’s life will be held on Sunday, June 6, 2021, at the Valley View Pavilion at Seminole Valley Park in Cedar Rapids from 2 to 5 p.m. Eulogy will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Jerry was born on June 7, 1942, in Riceville, Iowa, to Carl and Emma (Horstman) McInroy and grew up working on the family farm. After graduating from Riceville High School in 1960, he served in the U.S. Air Force until 1964 and was stationed in Okinawa and Germany. He later moved to Cedar Rapids, where he married Jane Hacker and they had two children, Brooke and Travis. They lived on an acreage in rural Norway, Iowa, for several years before moving back to Cedar Rapids. He was employed at Penford Products in Cedar Rapids for over 25 years and after retiring in 2005, he worked as a bus driver for Cedar Rapids School District until 2018.
Jerry was a dependable, hardworking and consistent presence for his family. He was a man of routine, and it was often said that one could set a clock to him. Jerry loved making others laugh with stories about his youthful shenanigans and military memories. He was very handy and could fix (or cobble!) almost anything. A lifelong Democrat, Jerry was one of the rare few who became more progressive as he got older. He had a fondness for animals, and in his later years, enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels delight in the food and water he left out for them in his backyard.
Jerry is survived by his children: Brooke, of Iowa City, and Travis, of Cedar Rapids; two brothers: Orville, of Cedar Rapids, and Jim, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, his partner, Jane, and brother, Keith.
Jerry had a kind heart and an easy, memorable laugh. He will be greatly missed. Please share condolences and memories with the family online at EverLoved.com, or by mail at: 3620 Johnson Ave NW Cedar Rapids, IA 52405.
