As far as I recall my family has known the Phillips for some time but I was first introduced to Jerry and LaRose through the Awana Program at Hauser Community Church. LaRose was one of my leaders when I was in elementary school, helping me to learn and recite bible verses. She was kind, methodical, and patient. Jerry was a leader as well and he definitely brought a certain je ne sais quoi to his role. For example, I remember he told us he didn’t have a belly button- as little kids we were quite incredulous- so he lifted up his shirt and showed us a long scar across his abdomen to prove it— that’ll get a lot of elementary schoolers’ attention! I recall a story about a removed appendix…I don’t remember the Bible lesson that night but I remember that experience!

As an adult I was introduced to the Phillips in a new way- seeing Jerry thoughtfully care for LaRose in her final years. One summer I attended a camping trip with my grandmother which was reunion of a bible study group that had been established before I was born and this group of believers still prioritized spending time together- the McSwains, the Phillips, the Mitts, the Hiserotes, the Greigs, the Bakers, and others. Gathered around the fire pit one night as we all ate together I saw Jerry feeding LaRose, patiently spooning one bite at a time and gently cleaning her face with her napkin when she lost control of her dinner. I was struck by how tender and caring he was, working to help her be apart of the group as much as possible.

Although I wish I had been able to know Jerry better it was apparent he was an intelligent man, funny guy, faithful/loving husband, and genuine human being. I will definitely visit Jerry Phillips Reserve in the future and I can’t wait to visit with him and LaRose in heaven.

Memories of Jerry are very fond ones - he was someone I admired and looked up to. I knew both Jerry and LaRose from their volunteer work at our church when I was a child. I got to know Jerry better when he volunteered to drive my CYIA team all over the place to do Five Day Clubs in the area when I was a teenager. I was struggling with teen acne at the time and Jerry made funny jokes about how it was just due to me drooling in my sleep. I really enjoyed this humor - it actually made me feel less embarrassed to be able to laugh about it. We also had a running joke that I would inherit his car, a nice navy blue Toyota Camry (if memory serves). I certainly liked the car but Jerry driving us around in it made it extra special.

You could always count on Jerry for kindness, compassion, intellectual humor and stimulating conversation at a good clip! He was generous with his time and his knowledge. I loved how he laughed and squinched up his face when he was ticked by something. Such a lovely person - I am fortunate to have known him.

My thoughts are with Jerry’s family as they celebrate and honor his life. 💕

December 1, 2021 - Jerry Phillips tells the story of how he created the reserve named in his honor.
Dad volunteered the family to help out at the seamans center.  We would go play pingpong with the japanese crew on the ships in port at the center.  He would invite them home for dinner.  We all learned a bit of the language so we could talk to  them.
Jerry was one of the volunteers that worked with DAV and drove to the VA in roseburg often. He was one of the nicest men I had the pleasure of knowing he was always there to lend a hand for the DAV program at a moments notice he will be missed.
